Beta testing, without the hype

Use the app before
anyone else does.

Testers.to explains how beta testing really works: what testers do all day, how to get into real programmes on iOS and Android, which ones actually pay, and how to write a bug report that gets you invited back.

The work

What beta testers actually do

Use unfinished software on purpose

A build that is a few weeks from release, with rough edges and missing pieces. Your job is to use it the way a real customer would, and find where it breaks.

Reproduce what you find

The valuable part is not noticing the crash. It is writing down the steps that make it happen again on a tester's device, every time.

Describe it in a way a developer can act on

Device, version, what you expected, what happened instead, a screenshot or recording. Four lines plus a picture beats a paragraph of frustration.

Stay to the end of the programme

Half of beta testers install the build and go quiet. Finishing the cycle, retesting fixes and filling in the feedback form is what gets you invited to the next one.

Getting in

Four steps to your first programme

01

Pick the platform you actually own

An iPhone, an Android phone, a Windows PC, a console, a Mac. Programmes are platform-specific, so start with the device in your pocket rather than the one you plan to buy.

02

Learn the two ways in

On iOS: TestFlight, plus the studio's own sign-up page. On Android: Google Play's open and closed testing tracks, plus the same sign-up pages. Those are the entry points for most public betas.

03

Apply to a handful, not one

Programmes fill and studios say no. Ten applications over a fortnight is realistic; one application is a coin flip you will lose.

04

Test properly in week one

Go through every screen once, deliberately. Report two or three clear issues. That single behaviour separates you from most of the group.

The money

What paid testing really looks like

Moderated sessions

You talk through a task on a video call while a researcher watches. Usually paid per session, and the most reliable income of the four. You need a quiet room and a decent microphone.

Unmoderated tests

Record your screen and voice while completing set tasks. Smaller amounts per test, no scheduling, and available at any hour. Good for building a record before applying for bigger work.

Bug bounties and per-issue pay

Some programmes pay for confirmed, well-documented defects. Rare, competitive, and the report quality is everything. Treat it as a bonus rather than a plan.

Public betas for apps and games usually pay in early access, store credit or a small gift card, not cash. Cash tends to come from research panels and testing platforms. Be sceptical of anyone charging you to join.

Questions

Before you apply

Do I need experience to become a beta tester?

No. Public betas are open by design. What separates testers is not a certificate; it is writing two or three clear reports in the first week and finishing the cycle. Paid research work is more selective, and usually asks for a little recorded practice first.

Can I be a beta tester on a normal phone?

Yes. Most iOS betas run through TestFlight on an ordinary iPhone, and most Android betas run through a Play Store testing track. You do not need a developer account or a jailbroken device.

Is beta testing a full-time income?

For most people, no. It is a useful side income and a genuine foot in the door for QA work. A small number of testers build it into regular part-time earnings over a year or two, usually by specialising: accessibility, payments, or games.

Will installing beta software break my phone?

It can misbehave: battery drain, crashes, an app losing data. The honest advice is to test on a device you could live without for a week, and never on the only phone you rely on for work.

Do I have to keep the work confidential?

Usually yes. Many programmes ask you not to share screenshots or talk publicly about unreleased features. Read the terms before you post a video of anything you are testing.

What is the fastest way to get a first invite?

Apply to several programmes in one sitting, and install and test within the first two days. Studios often fill their tester slots from whoever responds first.

Ask a question

Stuck on getting in, or getting paid?

Tell us the app or game, the platform you own and where you are stuck: no invite, no response, an unclear task, or a payment that never arrived. We answer within two working days.

“Anyone can find a bug. Being able to reproduce it is the job.”

We do not run a testing platform and we do not sell places in programmes. This is guidance, and it is free.

Every message is read and answered within two working days. Nothing you send is shared.
